Ojibway Prayer

Posted by Barbara (Florida, United States) on 31 December 2007 in Lifestyle & Culture.

As 2007 passes and we move into 2008, I end this year and begin the New Year with a prayer that is special to me.

This past year I gained new knowledge, strength and wisdom by spending time on the reservation with the tribe I belong to, the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians. I relived memories of my childhood, traveled old and new paths. Listened to the sounds of the Hiawatha Trail and heard the thunder of the Tahquamenon Falls. It was like a rebirth for me, allowing me to grow, to step off of the old path and onto the new one that will lead me to where I need to be in my spirit. Life is a journey and I am traveling it.

~Ojibway Prayer~
Oh Great Spirit whose voice I hear in the winds,
And whose breath gives life to everyone.
Hear me.

I come to you as one of your many children;
I am weak....I am small....I need your wisdom and your strength.

Let me walk in beauty, and make my eyes ever behold the red and purple sunset.
Make my hands respect the things you have made.
Make my ears sharp so I may hear your voice.
Make me wise, so that I may uderstand what you have taught my people, and the lessons you have hidden in each leaf and rock.

I ask for wisdom and strength.
Not to be superior to my brothers, but to be able to fight my greatest enemy, myself.
Make me ever ready to come before you with clean hands and a straight eye.

So as life fades away as a fading sunset,
my spirit may come to you without shame.
